About

SRM University Sikkim initiated the Bachelor of Sciences - Physics program under the Basic Sciences department in the year 2018. The program aims at creating and developing competent and skilful Physicist who with their rigorous training are ready to solve problems related to Physics. Apply knowledge of basic science, mathematics and computing appropriate to the discipline. Acquire knowledge and understanding of fundamental concepts, principles and theories related to the identified subject areas.Advanced knowledge in some areas of interest in physics and is familiar with contemporary research within various fields of physics.Develop skills of critical thinking, hypothesis building, and to apply the scientific method to physics concepts, theoretical models and laboratory experiments. Develop problem solving skill to, independently and creatively, identify and formulate problems and to plan and, use theoretical and/or experimental methods, carry out advanced tasks within specified time limits. The third year of B.Sc. Physics includes a project where the students are required to take up a small laboratory based research project, which would ensure grooming of graduate student into future scientists.

Vision and Objective

Department of Physics, SRM University Sikkim, has a vision to equip students with in-depth understanding of the fundamentals of Physics.

  • To help the students to acquire a comprehensive knowledge and sound understanding of fundamentals of Physics.
  • To develop practical, analytical and mathematical skills of Physics.
  • To prepare students to acquire a range of general skills, to solve problems, to evaluate information, to use computers productively, to communicate with society effectively and learn independently.
  • Enable them to acquire a job efficiently in diverse fields such as Science and Engineering, Education, Banking, Public Services, Business etc.,

Apart from B.Sc. course, we would be starting M.Sc. program soon. A student graduating from the department, will be exposed to every aspect of the subject - theoretical, applied, instrumental, computational and experimental, in tune with the latest advancements in sciences, which are essential to mold students into able and noble scientists of the future. The intake of Ph.D. students is in progress and research areas are being chosen in a very focused manner.

About the Course

If it weren't for the physicists, the modern world would be a very different place. The study of physics has brought underlies so many pivotal discoveries of the 20th century including the laser, TV, radio, computer technology, DNA and nuclear weapons for instance - and has played a vital role in the development of quantum theory, the theory of relativity, the big bang theory, and the splitting of the atom.

B.Sc. Physics or Bachelor of Science in Physics is an undergraduate Physics course. Involving the study of matter and its motion through space time, along with related concepts such as energy and force. The department is focused on delivering skills that are in high demand in diverse sectors relating to numeracy, problem solving, data analysis and the communication of complex ideas, as well as a wider understanding of how the world works, on a scientific and human level.

The main focus is on delivering more in-depth, specialized knowledge, to prepare the graduate work effectively in a specific field.
