The SRMUS started Department of Sociology in the year 2018. Presently the department is offering Masters Programme in Sociology. The M.A. in Sociology is conceived with the notion of providing a sound theoretical base for the understanding of contemporary social phenomena.

The course highlights the importance of classical and contemporary theories on one hand and a number of special fields of empirical Sociological studies on the other. It offers a total of four papers on theories and a paper on Social research methods, besides a substantial number of papers that aim at detailed analyses of diverse fields from a Sociological point of view. Papers such as Sociology of Education, Medical Sociology, Migration Studies, Development and Globalization, Social Stratification, Gender and Society, and Sociology of Media provide a detailed and in-depth theoretical as well as empirical analysis. Two skill-based papers aim at enhancing practical skills of students in computers fundamentals and software tools like SPSS, NVIVO.

During the first and second semester, the students will be expected to develop their research skills and familiarize themselves with the various aspects of conducting social research. In the end of the third semester the students will take up a mini project on the topic of their choice and conduct fieldwork. The entire fourth semester is dedicated for the students to write Dissertation in their chosen area of specialization or produce report based on their Internship under the guidance of the faculty. Altogether, this program provides four theory papers, eight applied papers and two skill-based papers in addition to the NGO internship and writing Dissertation with a total of twenty credits in each semester. Lastly, this course is designed following the UGC guidelines and norms for a recognized degree in Masters’ of Arts in Sociology.

  • The applicant can apply online or download the application form from the website
  • The aspiring learners should submit the filled in application form to the University through online or directly.
  • The necessary documents mentioned in the application form should be submitted along with the filled application form
  • The University would verify the applicant’s qualification, eligibility criteria and other requirements for admissions
  • The confirmation of admission will be communicated to the candidates directly
  • The admission will be subject to confirmation by SRM University Sikkim.
  • The University reserves its rights to reject an application.
  • A candidate can pursue only one program at a time from SRMUS. If at any time after admission, it is found that a student has not fulfilled all the requirements stipulated in the offer of admission, the University authorities may revoke the admission and report the matter to the Vice-Chancellor.

Note:
The candidates are required to submit the attested copies of the documents except for Transfer, Migration and Conduct Certificates which will be taken in original. However, the original of all the other documents are required to be shown during admission for verification.
