About

The Department of Botany was established in 2018. The Department aims to establish a platform for studying the rich biodiversity prevailing in Eastern Himalayas, there by respecting and enriching the rich cultural heritage of North-Eastern states of India. The course curriculum of the department has always been strong and forward looking. Presently, the Department is offering three years Botany (Honours) course. The syllabus has been framed as per the UGC guidelines. The syllabus is a unique blend of practical and theory courses and is comparable to the curriculum offered by top universities in India. The Department also regularly organises field trips, study tours, botanical excursions and scientific interactions with eminent scientists that help in bringing about holistic development of students. The Department also organises seminars, symposia and thematic workshops with participation of faculty as well as students from other universities and colleges. Projection facilities are also available in classrooms to facilitate student learning with visual representation of concepts discussed in class.

Web based interactive smart classes for theory and practical are conducted along the traditional chalk and talk method. The laboratory room is well furnished and can accommodate more than 50 students. The department has an herbarium room where the students are given an opportunity to gain access to any plant sample for their perusal. The present strength of students in our department is 51. Departmental library is attached with the practical laboratory for the easy access of information. The computer facilities are provided to students for acquiring knowledge at hands reach.

Vision

Stmt. - 1 To provide quality education and develop a research temperament amongsta vast majority of learners in the realm of plant sciences.
Stmt. - 2 To develop a knowledge repository on the rich plant diversity of the Eastern Himalayas and their sustainable conservation and management.
Stmt. - 3 To develop a robust ethical and moral infra-structure amongst the learners of north-east and other parts of the country, as well as those hailing from neighboring countries who wish to undertake higher research.

Mission

Stmt. - 1 To provide a fecund ground to the learners where they can harness their knowledge towards different branches of plant sciences, their dynamics, and the industrial applicability.
Stmt. - 2 To kindle scientific temperament which would lay a plinth for higher research leading to innovation amongst the learners within the framework of ethics and integrity.
Stmt. - 3 To churn out highly motivated and competent individuals who with frontier technologies and subject knowledge will contribute meaningfully towards addressing the environmental sustainability issues.
Stmt. - 4 To equip learners with effective written and oral communication skills and enable them to share their scientific findings and ideas to diverse stakeholders.

Infrastructure

SRM University Sikkim has taken an important initiative by introducing Botany as one of the core subject in Basic Sciences. University is following UGC guidelines for framing curriculum and syllabi for Botany. The laboratory is well equipped with many sophisticated instruments, and state of the art laboratory facilities. The practical sessions are designed to expose the students to classical and applied aspects of Plant science.

The Department of Botany consists of well qualified teachers having good academic qualifications and research experience in the field of basic and applied field of Plant Science. Students graduating from this Department The entire campus is Wifi enabled offering 24hrs internet connectivity. The University also offers smart class rooms –complete with audio and video connections.

Every classroom is equipped with projectors. A central Library is located in the University main block consisting of latest books by renowned Indian and foreign authors. It is the aim of SRM University Sikkim to deliver high-quality education at undergraduates and post graduates levels. The University will leave no stones unturned in shaping the future of young minds in the right direction.

  • Received extramural research grant entitled ‘Studies on traditional ethnomedicinal practices for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia by the indigenous tribal populations in Sikkim- An ethnopharmacological approach’ funded by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)-North East Seed Grant Scheme, New Delhi (PI- Dr. Biswajit Bose, Co-PI- Dr. Anand Sharma).
  • Received research grant entitled ‘Studies on bioactive metabolite profiling, molecular docking, antioxidant potential and in vitro inhibitory activities of Nakima (Tupistra nutans Wall.) on key enzymes linked to hyperglycemia, photoaging and cognitive disorders’ funded by SRM University Sikkim. (PI- Dr. Biswajit Bose, Co-PI- Dr. Anand Sharma).
